Remember, this is all hypothetical since I’ve never actually talked with any high rank Oceania players, but I see no other possibility.

  • The Koreans will have a massive ping advantage, since it makes sense for the server being used for a high rank game to be where the most high rank players are.
  • Koreans are not guaranteed to speak English, and thus are awful teammates for Oceania players.
  • If people rarely play with each other, the ranks don’t even out to ensure that equal rank means equal skill.

  • 4000 SR in Oceania doesn’t necessarily mean the same thing as 4000 SR in Korea.
  • I haven’t seen what happens when Oceania players are put against Koreans by the matchmaker, but I know this: Most likely Korea, based on proximity and number of players. So who would GMs in Oceania match with, since they can no longer play within their region? Asia of course, nowhere else is close enough for a sensible ping. GM players in the US are already rare enough that a lot of them know each other, GM in Oceania must be a ghost town. Oceania is by far the smallest playerbase. I suspect it’s because of what happens when players reach the top of Oceania’s rankings. So, why would one of the four playerbases have the rankings end up totally skewed?

Never seen a diamond border though, but I heard they exist. In silver, there’ll often be one or more silver borders, with golds and platinums not being uncommon. It’s not the occasional random who’s deliberately de-ranking or rare people with mental/physical disabilities that make them perform poorly despite immense experience, these are very common sights and players legitimately trying to win. They communicate information usefully to each other (“Widow right”, Widow dead), they rarely pick heroes that they’re bad at, they build good teams (unless salty damage mains), and they play their heroes very well.Ĭountless silver, gold, platinum borders stuck in bronze/silverīronze and silver are supposedly the ranks where people don’t understand the game, and things like reaction time, aim, and teamwork determines how far above these ranks you get.ĭespite this, players with hundreds or thousands of hours in the game (as indicated by their borders) will be stuck in bronze/silver. Yet that doesn’t match up with what I see: Bronze players are actually very decent, and silvers have improved to the point where they’re impeccable when they’re not being salty.īy “impeccable” I mean I genuinely cannot see any flaws in the abilities of silver players. A lot of bronze players don’t even seem to understand how their heroes work.

I’ve seen videos of what US players are like at various ranks, and it’s completely different to Oceania.Īpparently, bronze and silver players have no clue how to position themselves, constantly make mistakes, and never communicate. It seems like everyone in Oceania is getting pushed down into bronze and silver, regardless of their skill.Įxtremely high skill of bronze and silver players There’s no shortage of bronze and silver players though. Even accounting for the fact that they might be temporary golds (below 2000 SR) they’re still getting matched hundreds of SR from their own rank. A match was usually found within 50SR.Īnd yet, now I see golds anywhere in the 1500-2000 SR range. When I was a gold player new to the game (now silver), there were plenty of other gold players. Rarity of gold players, and presumably anyone above silver This fourth playerbase has three weird things with how rankings work though: Because they’re mostly English-speaking, they have Americas set as their region, but the geographic distance to the Americas is enormous so to avoid unplayably high ping they only ever get matched with other people in Oceania. That’s three independent playerbases.īut Oceania (Australia, New Zealand, and surrounding islands) is a fourth independent playerbase. You set yourself as being in one, and you never play with the others. Obviously there’s Americas, Europe, and Asia as the official playerbases. This game has not three, but four independent playerbases.
